Science and research: Expeditions and research projects in remote parts of Greenland

Science and research: Expeditions and research projects in remote parts of Greenland

Activities in the form of expeditions in parts of Greenland which are not generally accessible, require permission before the activity may take place. This includes travelling:

  1. on the inland ice in Greenland and glaciers issuing therefrom;
  2. in the National Park in North and East Greenland and the adjoining sea territory;
  3. in the rest of East Greenland from the National Park to a line east/west of Kangerlussuatsiaq (Lindenow Fjord); and
  4. in the rest of North Greenland from the National Park to latitude 780 N.

Permission for travelling in areas a – d is issued by the Expedition Office under the Government of Greenland.

The purpose of the requirement for a prior permit for travelling in certain parts of Greenland is in particular to make it possible to attach relevant terms to the permit, including terms that may prevent it becoming necessary to initiate rescue measures, or that may facilitate the implementation of such measures.

In order for the relevant authorities to have a sufficient opportunity to carry out a thorough investigation of whether an applied travelling is sound, the application must be submitted no later than 12 weeks before the travelling is expected to begin.

Further information can be found on the website: www.exp.gl

Arctic Hub works to connect researchers, institutions, and countries to create networks. Arctic Hub works to let knowledge flow and aims at making knowledge gained in Greenland more accessible, as it has the potential to drive society forward. Genetic resources

Anyone wishing to collect and exploit genetic resources in and from Greenland shall apply for prior informed consent. The exploitation of genetic resources includes any collection, storage, registration, acquisition, transfer and receipt of genetic resources from Greenland. Exploitation also includes research and development conducted based on the collected resource. Patenting based on the resource is also included in the requirement for a dividend sharing agreement.

When applying for a permit to exploit genetic resources in Greenland, the content of the application is assessed, and the application material is reviewed in the relevant departments before a license is issued. If a licensee wishes to exploit the collected material or results thereof commercially, an agreement with Mutually Agreed Terms shall be reached between the licensee or the licensee's institution or company, and the Government of Greenland.

The Agreement on the exploitation of genetic resources in Greenland is regulated by: "Inatsisartut Act No. 3 of 3 June 2016 on the exploitation of genetic resources and related activities". This act regulates access to, and distribution of benefits derived from the exploitation of genetic resources.
